For most of 2021, the southern border issue has been in the spotlight. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and border officials have called America’s attention to this serious crisis.
And many claim Joe Biden’s administration has done little to solve the problem. In fact, they say repealing Trump-era policies like Remain in Mexico have only made it worse.
Now, Republican leaders are tired of waiting — they’ve revealed their own plan of action.
A group of nine Republican governors, led by high-profile names like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, are taking matters into their own hands.
They’ve petitioned President Biden to thoroughly address the crisis, but they’ve seen few results. And Gov. Abbott has been scrambling to deal with the worsening border situation in his home state.
Abbott isn’t the only Governor to see his state besieged by unregistered migrants, either.
That’s why they’ve finally decided to create an ambitious plan to stem the tide. And after recent developments – the Del Rio surge, for instance – the Biden administration might have to react.
From Fox News:
Republican governors on Wednesday unveiled a 10-point plan to end the crisis at the southern border as they called on the Biden administration to act to solve the continuing surge of migrants, and reverse policies they say is fueling those record numbers.
Gov. Abbott added that Biden “caused a humanitarian crisis and chaos on our border.”
He also cited the Del Rio, Texas mess, and Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts added that at this point, Biden “must act.” He can no longer ignore the crisis, because far too many innocent people are suffering.
In July and August, the southern border saw upwards of 200,000 migrants rushing the border.
These numbers have spiraled out of control in recent months, and border authorities have warned that they’re being overwhelmed. Some have even said large parts of the border are completely undefended.
America is watching the chaos unfold on a daily basis, too. This is another reason President Biden can’t turn a blind eye anymore.
Said Arizona Gov. Ducey:
It’s not a secret anymore. They have created this crisis and Americans know it.
The 10-point plan requires that Biden take action: one of the major steps involves restoration of the Trump-era Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), or “Remain in Mexico.”
The governors also demand the end of “catch-and-release,” as well as the continuation of border wall construction, and an expansion of Title 42 deportations. All these would help tremendously, the GOP says.
But above all, Republicans are making it plain:
They say this crisis is entirely the fault of the Biden administration. Leaders like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) have been saying this for months, and they’re saying it even more loudly now:
This is a humanitarian crisis, this is a public health crisis this is a national security crisis, and Joe Biden and [Vice President] Kamala Harris won’t do a damn thing about it.
It’s this lack of action that has forced the GOP’s hand. And right now, these governors are attempting to do what Biden’s team has apparently refused to do.
