New Federal Indictment Reveals What Paul Pelosi Attacker Was Wearing When Police Arrived
New court filings in the case of the home invasion and assault on Paul Pelosi last month reveal what suspect David DePape was wearing during the early morning attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on October 28, San Francisco police arrived at the home and found Pelosi in his pajamas and the intruder wearing shorts, sneakers and a sweatshirt, which was revealed after he was indicted by a grand jury last week.
Pelosi opened the door, and just 15 seconds later he was struck by DePape with a hammer, according to the filing. The incident was recorded on the body cams of the two responding officers.
“The two officers opened the door to see the foyer of the Pelosi Residence, Mr. Pelosi, wearing a long-sleeved shirt, DEPAPE in shorts, running shoes and a sweatshirt, and DEPAPE and Mr. Pelosi jointly gripping a hammer,” the indictment reads.
When ordered to drop the hammer, DePape replied, “Ummm, nope,” wrestled it from Pelosi’s grip and swung at him, striking him on the head and causing a skull fracture and other injuries, authorities say. Police immediately tackled DePape and called an ambulance to treat the injured 82-year old.
According to the new filings, officers recovered a cellphone, cash, transit passes and “an unidentified card” from DePape’s right pocket, as well as tape, rope, gloves and a journal from his bag, among other items.
The revelation comes after weeks of speculation and conspiracies that DePape, Pelosi, or both men were in their underwear when police arrived at the door, after local outlet KTVU reported that DePape was in his underwear, only to later remove it from their article, saying they had “misstated what clothes the suspect was wearing when officers found him.”
DePape not only researched the home of Pelosi but also two other targets on an alleged hit list, just two days before he broke into the House speaker’s mansion in the Pacific Heights.
One of the addresses belonged to someone identified in the indictment only as “Target 1,” who investigators said DePape identified as “’way up’ on his target list.”
“He explained that he had a plan to use Speaker Pelosi to lure Target 1,” according to the probable cause statement. He allegedly viewed the congresswoman as the “leader of the pack” of Democratic officials he accused of “lies.”
Much of DePape’s statements were from a recorded interview in which he confessed to swinging the hammer with “full force” and wanted to break the congresswoman’s “kneecaps.”
DePape, an illegal immigrant from Canada, faces federal charges of assaulting an immediate family member of a federal official and attempted kidnapping of a federal officer. He faces many charges in the state of California, carrying a maximum penalty of life in prison.
